The Overland Track through Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Claire National Park is very exotic for a Norwegian hiker, in many ways. The 65 km | 6-day trek is located on the island of Tasmania, south of Australia: far away from the rest of the world. Called “Australia’s premier alpine walk”, the landscape is varied and very different from the more arid mainland. Dense forests, marshes, mountain plateaus, scree fields, and even snow: this hike had it all.
Professionally, this trail impressed me in many ways. The trail was hardened, facilitated, and well-maintained from start to end. It contributed to my visitor experience, also knowing erosion levels are kept to a minimum. Only 30 hikers a day can receive a permit to hike the whole trail. The main trail winds through stunning scenery. In addition, there are numerous side trails to mountain tops (Mt. Ossa being one of the most spectacular!) and waterfalls. Basic, but well-designed mountain huts and tent facilities are located at convenient intervals.
Including side trails, I hiked 117 km in five days. I highly enjoyed hiking for a few days without any cell phone coverage. On the trail and at the cabins, I met a bunch of friendly Australian and international co-hikers, who all shared the same passion for hiking and the unique landscapes found on Tasmania. Tranquility and beauty are what I will remember the Overland Track for.
